Our Ready to Learn program is designed to build partnerships with local community organizations such as childcare centers, schools, libraries, civic groups, and government agencies. We work to provide the best and most appropriate trainings and services for our partner's organization.
Featured Partner: Planet Dog Foundation
The Planet Dog Foundation works to promote and support programs in which service dogs, therapy dogs, and other "working" dogs serve and save human lives. By increasing awareness and promoting programs that enrich the human-canine bond, Planet Dog's ambitious philanthropy has awarded dozens of canine-friendly organizations with grants totaling more than $75,000.
Thirteen's Ready to Learn is proud to contribute to Planet Dog's mission. Thanks to a generous grant from the Planet Dog Foundation, Ready to Learn will partner with the New York Public Library to present a series of kid-friendly "Martha SpeaksTM" screenings and activity sessions. To improve children's reading levels by raising their self-esteem, "Martha SpeaksTM @ the Library" will also fund opportunities for children to read to and interact with therapy dogs.

Thirteen/WNET founded the Reading Partnership Project (RPP) in partnership with six schools in high-need districts on Long Island as a literacy-based initiative funded by the Long Island Community Foundation's Horace and Amy Hagedorn Fund. RPP began with a cohort of kindergarten students using the Ready To Learn methodology. Kindergarten teachers, school librarians and parent coordinators discovered how PBS children's programming and resources can be used to develop fun and innovative lesson plans that enhance literacy. Through in-school turnkey trainings, RPP has continued to follow the cohort of students, now in fourth grade at selected schools. Each participating school submits monthly topics and Thirteen/WNET provides books, educational videos, lesson plans and other support materials for their teachers and parents. Each year the schools facilitate events like, parent reading nights, multicultural potlucks or author visits to keep their families engaged in the Reading Partnership Project.
